Endoscopy is performed under anesthesia and uses a small camera advanced into the digestive tract, either through the esophagus and stomach or the colon (i.e. colonoscopy). Endoscopy is used by the emergency service to retrieve objects ingested by pets or by the internal medicine service to visualize and take samples (i.e. biopsies of the gastrointestinal tract). Avets has removed everything from fishhooks and needles to coins, rawhides and plastic toys from the esophagi and stomachs of dogs and cats and may be an alternative to surgery for evaluation of "GI" disease.
