Internal Medicine

Under the leadership of our talented board-certified veterinary internists, Avets’ internal medicine service combines a wide range of information to diagnose and treat your pet in many important areas. By using advanced technology to gather data, studying clinical signs and lab results, and discussing symptoms with the person who knows your pet best (That’s you!), our internal medicine service provides expert insight and treatment for your pet’s situation. Patients are seen by referral appointment and can be managed long-term by our internal medicine service or by your primary care veterinarian.

Services offered by the Internal Medicine department at Avets:

Bronchoscopy: Does your pet have a chronic cough or other respiratory ailments? We may use bronchoscopy to find answers. We’ll guide a tiny camera down into the lungs while your pet is safely anesthetized so that we can evaluate and obtain samples. Available through Internal Medicine, this service augments radiography and CT to evaluate lung disease.

Endoscopy: Endoscopy works the same with pets as it does with human patients. Our specialists guide a small camera into the digestive tract, either through the esophagus and stomach or the colon (i.e. colonoscopy). We administer anesthesia to keep your pet safe and calm. Our internal medicine service uses endoscopy to visualize and take samples (i.e. biopsies of the gastrointestinal tract) and often as an alternative to surgery for evaluation of GI disease. Our emergency service uses endoscopy to retrieve objects (foreign bodies) ingested by pets. Avets has removed everything from fishhooks, needles to coins, rawhides, and plastic toys from the esophaguses and stomachs of curious or over-enthusiastic dogs and cats.
