Endoscopy works the same with pets as it does with human patients. Our specialists guide a small camera into the digestive tract, either through the esophagus and stomach or the colon (i.e. colonoscopy). We administer anesthesia to keep your pet safe and calm. Our internal medicine service uses endoscopy to visualize and take samples (i.e. biopsies of the gastrointestinal tract) and often as an alternative to surgery for evaluation of "GI" disease. And our emergency service uses endoscopy to retrieve objects ingested by pets. Avets has removed everything from fishhooks and needles to coins, rawhides and plastic toys from the esophagi and stomachs of curious or over-enthusiastic dogs and cats.
