Avian and Exotics specialty Care

The Avian & Exotics service at Avets is available to evaluate, diagnose, and treat all non-traditional species, including (but not limited to):

  • Amphibians: caecilians, frogs, salamanders, toads
  • Birds: budgerigars/parakeets, cockatiels, cockatoos, chickens, finches, lovebirds, macaws, toucans
  • Fish: freshwater, saltwater
  • Small mammals: chinchillas, guinea pigs, ferrets, rabbits, prairie dogs, sugar gliders
  • Reptiles: lizards, snakes, turtles, tortoises
  • Invertebrates: hermit crabs, scorpions, tarantulas

The Avian Practice category is the American Board of Veterinary Practitioner’s (ABVP) second-largest Recognized Veterinary Specialty. Most Avian Diplomates are in private practice and see all different species of exotic pets. Diplomates are expected to be skilled in the art and science of medicine and surgery and other areas such as preventative care, wellness care, husbandry, nutrition, and behavior.

Veterinary professionals with a passion and competency for exotics care may pursue further training and specialist designation—in Avian Practice, Exotic Companion Mammal Practice, and/or Reptile and Amphibian Practice—through the ABVP. Veterinarians who obtain Avian board certification work in high-quality practices and have access to the latest equipment, supplies, and medical/surgical procedures. They routinely see interesting, complex cases and can work them up and manage them at a high standard.

Board certification is challenging but rewarding. Veterinarians must have at least four years of full-time, high-quality practice experience with birds and be able to document a commitment to high-level continuing education. During this time, they also receive advanced training in other exotic pet species including small mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fish, etc. Candidates must also be able to communicate professionally and scientifically by following instructions and preparing written case reports. To pass the comprehensive examination, candidates often spend an average of 1 hour per day studying, reading textbook and journal articles, and taking courses and practice tests.

At Avets, our Avian & Exotics specialist, Dr. Jennilee Morrison is a Diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners – with a designation in Avian Practice – “DABVP (Avian Practice)”. She has presented at numerous conferences and veterinary student lectures. She has published research involving non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines in birds: Pharmacokinetics of a Single Dose of Oral and Intramuscular Meloxicam in African Penguins (Spheniscus demersus).

Dr. Morrison has also worked in numerous AZA zoos and aquaria taking care of a variety of exotic species. AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums meet the highest standards in animal care and welfare and provide a fun, safe, and educational experience.
